ABOUT THE ARTIST
Inspired to put paint to canvas
(by his friend, the legendary Dennis Green) Joe Wood began his journey as a successful painter of ephemeral images. In 1999, he experienced his first of three sold-out one-man shows (2000, 2002, 2004). In 2003, Joe Wood (invited by the Fender Custom Shop) started painting custom guitar and amp sets which are sold at NAAM. Many Joe Wood original paintings are owned by celebrated musicians, professional surfers and, even, executives in various entertainment industries.

Reaching Back To Punks Bluesy Past 2007
By Steve Isray Staff Writer
For the last several years, singer/songwriter Joe Wood has made a name for himself as a soulful blues-man, playing relentlessly with his roots combo Joe Wood & The Lonely Ones. The band just finished its second album of original materials and plays regularly around southern California. Wood is also an accomplished artist. His portraiture draws on the same iconic figures that influence his sound. He has sold out several one man shows and has painted guitars for the International NAAM show for the Fender Custom Shop. We recently spoke with Wood...
Are there any connections or parallels for you between punk rock and blues?
If you were to look at some footage of the old masters, like holwlin' wolf or Son House, or listen to the Robert Johnson recordings, the message is of isolation, desperation and doom. Some songs and stories of that era parallel the same message and attitude of the earlier punk rock music.

When you are playing a gig with your current band The Lonely Ones do you ever look out at the crowd and miss the days of a swirling  pit at your feet?
No, not at all. Back in the day people would go to shows and it was all about the music and the audience used to 'pogo' .  The audience I play to today enjoys the music, much like they did at the beginning of punk rock scene.

You are also an artist who, among other things, creates vibrant portraits of great jazz, blues and rock musicians. How did you get into painting and what inspires your artwork?
One day I picked up the brush and my first painting ever was of Robert Johnson and two Hellhounds at his side. I stepped back and looked at this huge canvas and thought, "I think I can do this". I am really inspired by the music, like Etta James, John Coltrane, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Johnny Cash... I get a visual images that I have to express on canvas.

One of your earliest bands was Joe Wood and the Loners. Your current band is Joe Wood and the Lonely Ones. Are you a lonely guy?
No, not at all. Truthfully, the names are taken from some of the early 60's car clubs that I liked.

A Night of Rocking Blues by Brenda Knepper 2005
The Blue Cafe was rocking on Saturday night, November 26, 2005, with a line-up that included Joe Wood and the Lonely Ones, Buck Wildstar and the inimitable Walter Trout and the Radicals.  Appearing regularly at the Blue Cafe as the house band, Joe Wood and the Lonely Ones featured Wood’s bluesy vocals. Born and raised in Long Beach, singer/songwriter Joe Wood’s background includes a lengthy stint as the lead vocalist for the ’80s punk rock band, True Sounds of Liberty (TSOL). Transforming into a blues musician while maintaining his hard rock roots, Wood has played with many of his heroes including B.B. King, Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf. Wood has a powerful voice that’s perfect for the blues. Joe started their first number aptly entitled “Wait On Time.” Although adept on the guitar, it is clear that Wood’s voice is his main instrument. His vocals ranged from screaming wails, gruff shouts, rhythmic rockin' rap, and a smooth blues sound. The group played B.B. King’s “Don’t Want A Soul Hangin’ Around My House” and I would have liked to have heard more of Wood’s plaintive, wailing voice (“tell her to PLEEAAAASE stay away, cause I don’t want a soul, baby, hangin’ around my house).

Blues for Liberty

Guitarist Joe Wood, a member of seminal Orange County punk band TSOL, moved to Leucadia last year. Wood has fronted a bluesy roots-rock trio called the Lonely Ones for five years. The three-man project includes Wood’s music mixed with blues classics (and features Dave Rodway on Drums and Mark Campbell on Bass). He describes the trio as a cross between Stevie Ray Vaughan and the Doors.

[Joe Wood] legally acquired the TSOL name with drummer Mitch Dean. (Wood was asked to front TSOL in 1983, four years after the band formed.)  Wood says he has allowed a reconstituted TSOL [with a new lead singer] to use the TSOL name to tour and record. (Joe Wood maintains rights to tour and play his era of TSOL songs in Brazil.)

Joe Wood and The Lonely Ones play regularly all over southern California throughout the month and every Wednesday at the [Hensley's] Flying Elephant in Carlsbad (free admission).
